Recent mapping of dangerous buildings in the Larnaca district has revealed alarming findings, with a total of 1,050 unsafe structures identified. Of particular concern are 31 high-risk buildings that remain occupied, including apartment blocks containing approximately 300 inhabited flats. The findings have raised significant concerns regarding public safety and the wellbeing of residents living in potentially hazardous conditions.
Authorities have already begun inspections and assessments, with many of the buildings classified as Category C, indicating a potential risk of collapse if immediate remedial measures are not taken. At the same time, the possibility of evacuating certain residential buildings is being considered, creating additional social challenges given the limited housing availability and elevated rental costs in Larnaca.
The issue of dangerous buildings has become a nationwide concern, prompting calls for faster enforcement procedures, stronger legislation and regular building inspections. Stakeholders emphasise that timely intervention is essential to safeguard human life, improve public safety and address the growing challenges associated with Cyprus’ ageing building stock.
